FHOS Fishing Report 01/12/2021

So much for being better about fishing reports…. the entire family came down with something right before New Years and we’ve been trying to stay away from people. Good news is that everyone is well and we are back to the grind. Thankfully, Fish Heads has some great employees and I can miss a few days without issue.

Offshore – The Dolphin bite has turned on over the past ten days and weather permitting, plenty of fish being caught on the troll and live baiting as well. Lots of Bonita bites to deal with, so whether pulling ballyhoo or drifting a live bait, make sure you have plenty of baits with you. The Scylla Flyer trolling lure has a solid Go-To lure for the Dolphin as well. Sailfish are around, and you’ll find them amongst the Bonita. There have been some nice 15 – 25lb Blackfin in the waters as well, so don’t assume its always a bonita bite…. little blackfin sashimi is always welcomed. Did have a pretty nice Blue Marlin caught the other day… with those Blackfin, Dolphin and Bonita around… you knew something bigger had to be picking off a few for a snack.

Bottom fishing has been solid with a mixed bag of various Snappers and some Cobia. Typical haunts and bottom spots. Cut squid doing most of the damage on the bottom, but some anglers pulling up some snappers with Slow Pitch jigs… look for more and more fish to be caught with these Slow Pitch jigs… this is going to have some staying power.

Pecks Lake – Spanish Mackerel are here… Glass minnow chum and Spoons. If you’ve been working an area for a bit and have has a steady stream of glass minnow chum working. try soaking a sardine on the bottom…. some reports of nice sized snappers have been making the rounds. There have also been some sheepshead at Pecks Lake too… small jigs and shrimp.
